Rivets

Besides different sized and shaped screws, rivets might be the one metal good with the largest array of possible uses. One of the most famous examples of the use of these construction elements is the Eiffel Tower in Paris, where rivets serve not only as an object of function, but aesthetics as well. The tower houses a whooping two and a half million rivets, all custom made, which hold together a little bit more than eighteen thousand steel parts. Their initial price is unknown, but the 324m high and 10 ton heavy construct is more than enough proof of the excellent coupling properties of rivets.

 

Rivet use in construction

Rivets are deformable elements used for the coupling of two or more parts. These can consist of the same or different materials. One can make such a link by pushing a rivet through an antecedently drilled hole, then deforming the rivet on one or both sides. Individual elements become permanently linked. Different sized and shaped rivets are used in shipbuilding, construction, flight, leather, car, furniture and electrical industry. Rivets can even be found in bridges, household appliances, cardboard products and other items. Rivet shape, material and size

Rivets can be any size, depending on the construct they will be holding together. In Zakrajšek d.o.o. we make rivets to order, their diameter and length for each type are:

  • solid rivets: diameter from Ø0,6 to Ø0,7mm; length up to 75mm
  • tubular rivets: diameter from Ø4 to Ø6mm; length up to 35mm
  • semi-tubular rivets: diameter Ø2 to Ø7mm; length up to 70mm

Advantage of riveting

Rivets are inserted into a hole that is a little bit larger than the rivets’ diameter, and are deformed on one or both sides. The construction elements are coupled and the rivets endure the acting load. A large advantage of riveting is that one can link elements from different materials. Temperature does not affect the structure of the riveted parts and deformations and the link even endures the friction forces between the linked surfaces.
